Thomas is saying that obedience is the great test of life so by that he means by obeying what you are told to do is the great test in life. For example we are always being tested in life because we have to choose to do the right or to do the wrong and so that is like taking a test. You can either choose one answer and that will give a a score.

If we were to do or say a lie it will be honored and everyone will know you has the person that told that lie. This is why we need to always choose the right and never tell lies because that is not a good thing to do.
